State of Play and disaster recovery update
2/12/2016

The current state of affairs at Leyton Orient continues to gain coverage following the recent protest.

An article on the Vice Sports website which LOFT media rep Tom Davies contributed to, sets out clearly and objectively what has happened to the football club, and the varying reactions of fans, over the past few years.

LOFT has sought once again to meet with club owner Francesco Becchetti, to discuss ways of improving the situation for both him and supporters, but so far we have yet to have a response. Nonetheless we will keep trying to engage him on our simple manifesto for change:

  • A CEO and senior management team who understand the workings of our football club and can do their jobs unhindered
  • A manager put in place that understands the lower English Leagues, who is allowed to do his job unhindered
  • A sensible and consistent transfer and wages policy with the manager having the last word on transfers
  • A communications policy starting from the top as has been constantly promised, including a club AGM

At the very least, it is to be hoped that after yet another change of manager, Andy Edwards is given both the time and support to try and improve matters on the pitch. Crucially, he must also be left to train the squad the way he chooses and pick the team he wants to pick.

The success this season of the women's and youth teams shows that coaching staff at the club can and must be trusted to do the job asked of them, without interference from above. If it becomes clear that Mr Becchetti has not learnt this lesson and is unwilling to change the way he runs the club or put the club up for sale, then we will consider further protest measures against his regime.

Meanwhile, LOFT's disaster recovery sub-committee is continuing to plan for possible crisis scenarios at the club. We are making the assumption at present that the current owner's regime is not sustainable and that, in one form or another, the current regime will probably stop funding the club in a finite period of time. We are also making the assumption at present that such a stop will not occur in a managed fashion and that, in fact, we are expecting the owner to simply stop writing cheques one day.

To that end, we are undertaking the two key elements to a rescue in the event that the owner should take such an action:

Firstly, we are working on a transactional plan to take immediate control of the club in the event that the owner should simply walk away one day. This includes all the issues of actually running the club, from trying to establish financial stability to making sure the shirts are washed. This plan is not yet complete but we aim to have it complete by the end of the year.

Secondly, we are now actively searching for an investor partner who would provide sufficient funding to finance the shortfall in the club's running costs for a period of 3-5 years, to enable it to become a sustainable business. To that end, whilst we are not in a position to be able to reveal details, we can advise that we are actively engaged with a number of potential investors who may be in a position to assist in this manner.

We will keep everyone updated as and when this situation develops.

In the meantime, LOFT will continue to play an active role in bringing all matters affecting O's fans to the club’s attention via the Fans' Forum. The next meeting is being held on Thursday 8 December 2016.
