LOFT supports 'Keep Coventry in Coventry'
7/17/2013

The Sky Blue Trust, Coventry City's supporters' trust, has launched a campaign with a very simple aim and message: Keep Coventry in Coventry.

LOFT wishes to express its 100% support for this campaign, as Coventry's fans face a near-70 mile round trip to 'home' games for at least three seasons, if not longer.

It is disgraceful that Coventry's owners, having put the club into administration over unpaid rent at the Ricoh Arena, have effectively bought the club back and moved it out of its area. What is happening at Coventry makes a mockery of both the Football League's 'fit and proper owner' test and the rules on relocation of clubs - the latter should resonate with all Orient fans given the ongoing Olympic Stadium saga.

In allowing Coventry to groundshare at Northampton Town, the Football League have not only allowed another Wimbledon situation to develop, they have also set the price for a franchise at £1m - the bond that Coventry's 'new' owners are required to place with the League to ensure the club's return to the Coventry area.

The League put club relocation rules in place after the Wimbledon affair to prevent this sort of situation, and the League should therefore rescind its decision to allow a groundshare in Northampton. A football club is defined by the link to its community, and such a fundamental aspect should not be destroyed by a club's owners.
