Another petition handover snub
10/30/2011

Last Thursday, London Mayor Boris Johnson dealt another snub to Leyton Orient and its supporters. He refused both to accept the Save Orient petition, and to meet with London Assembly member Jennette Arnold on the issue.

This follows last week's walk-out of the London Assembly by Conservative members, ensuring that several petitions (including this one) could not be handed over.

In a joint statement, Doug Harper on behalf of LOFT and Tony Roome on behalf of the Leyton Orient Supporters Club stated their amazement at the Mayor's refusal to accept the petition for the second time in eight days:

"It is about time that he and his political party understood that they are representing ALL of London and not just those that have the bigger sway. The Conservative members of the GLA showed, at last weeks Mayor's Plenary, a lack of respect for anyone that does not share their interests by walking out of the meeting before all the business was done. We thought that the Mayor would have been embarrased by that behaviour, but he has now added insult to injury to everyone connected with LOFC."

Speaking at City Hall after the Mayor's refusal, Jennette Arnold said:

"This behaviour is typical of the Mayor who supports big interests in London but isn't interested in ordinary Londoners. Leyton Orient fans deserve better treatment than this from their Mayor. I will continue to fight on their behalf and will not let Boris Johnson forget the insult he has dealt over 3,000 supporters today."
